Setting up the installation

I started setting up the installation space a couple of days before the deadline, and overall I think it worked quite well. I wanted to keep it simple so that the main focus is the film. So essentially I have tried to give my work a context;

''Since its earliest days, video has been an intensely personal medium. Artist's are attracted to its immediacy, could use a camera like a writer uses a pen.''(p.125 Rush M. 2003)

my work is a personal piece of work that doesn't necessarily inform the viewer, but gives them an experiential insight to theme of meditation seen through my perspective.

The narrative itself focuses on, internal and external space using the body as my focus

red ink projections

Here are some of the red ink drip protections I created on my body. The colours help to ground the mood of my thoughts; i.e. in this case the red projections illustrate a negative 'mind'.

Tony Oursler

Oursler's work has a general focus on the 'face', and he is most well known for the array of surfaces he creates to project his videos onto (especially his disembodied head puppets). The face is important to him because ''...it's the way we communicate...It's really the way into our identity and empathy''(Oursler T.). So if I am talking about my anxieties, the face, the sounds and the body language all help to relay and communicate these feelings.

He uses sound scores of overlapping words. that are then coupled with filmed images that are projected onto interesting objects. The source material is often taken from popular culture, in particular television. Oursler's most recent work works on the notion of how people take the technology and the culture of mass media and personalise it and make it a part of their lives.

If a person is talking in a video, the audience interacts with it, as they feel that the speaker is talking to them as an individual. This is the sort of thing I have chosen to, as I have made several audio recordings of myself speaking about the external and internal aspects of meditation.

He also uses harsh lighting on his subjects when filming. This creates shadows and highlights on the subject allowing the viewer to see different aesthetics of the same thing. Having used projections in this project, I can begin to understand the effects that can be obtained from this method of working; i.e. adding emphasis to facial expressions and body gestures.

installation ideas and viewer intent

Material display ideas for installation-

I have chosen red for the feature colour of my installation, as it is the colour I associate with meditation as I meditate at the buddhist centre and my room, which both have red walls.

In theory I should somehow be connecting the installation to the film itself, but I feel that if I did that then it would distract too much form the film. I want to create a simple, but warm and sensual environment that echo's the theme of meditation and allows the viewer to interact with the film and surroundings.

Pipilotti Rist

PIpilotto Rist is a Swedish film/installation artist and her installations that she creates could be described as installation environments. The themes of her work focus on the sensual aspects of life; the sense of being in the world, being a body and a sensory organism,

''Rist's work is visceral, earthy, sexy, full of life. Up on the mezzanine.'' (Searke A. 2011)

Limitations of her 'self' expressed through her work such as displaying the products we use to clean with we destroy the planet with. She experiments with the scale of her projections sometimes projecting them very small, or extremely large, on the floor etc...

EAT PREY LOVE

The link below 'Eat Prey Love' starring Julia Roberts shows a clip of her character's experience of meditation. This is a good example of the processes that one feels whilst meditating. I think the focus on the motion of the eyes is particularly effective, as it visually co-ordinates what is going on internally in the mind, simultaneously with what is going on in the external meditation space, i.e. the distractions of the fly and fan.

Distraction audio and Visuals

I made made this distraction soundtrack recording a little while ago composed from some recordings in my recordings bank. I don't really think it works that well as the dictaphone I was using was not that great of quality.

I also took some random sequential photos that aid the sound effects. The sound and visuals were not considered together, therefore some of the audio works with the imaging sequence and some don't work at all.

I had originally thought it would be good to use the audio sound effect at the beginning of the film, but these sound clips alone just give an impression of external distractions. Incorporating a mix of internal (distractions in my mind) and external distractions will help to create a balance of the types of things that distract you

Wildlife - The penguin Cafe orchestra

Strangely enough, the music I am deciding to use for the film is by ''The Penguin Cafe Orchestra''. Generally their music is classed as folk music, but this particular track that I sourced entitled ''Wildlife'' taken from the ''Signs Of Life album'' has a different feel to it. It has an ambient and soothing instrumental quality to it that really grabbed my attention. I have been meditating to this track quite often, which has allowed me to connect with it in context to meditation. The bell/chiming sound effects are similar to the sounds of the singing bowl, which are used in the meditation sessions at the buddhist centre that I attend.

Here is the composition I have mage for my film installation. It is constructed from the processes that I go through when I meditate;

1. Prior meditation (feeling anxious and stressed - too many thoughts in your head)

2. preparation for meditation (creating the right atmosphere, posture, breathing, music etc...)

3. Meditation (becoming distracted by your thoughts going in and out allowing the mind to focus on meditation)

4. After meditation (That feeling of calm and alertness)

Hilary Lloyd - film installations

The Artist, Hilary Lloyd most recent film works create a sense of disconnection between the viewer and her work. She places certain stresses on her work in terms how it is seen as well as what is on the screen. The projectors she uses help to form part of the work itself, as they are placed in the fore-ground of the installations.

''Often when you make films, you are documenting something, and its really obviously clear that I'm not...I might notice things that have a particular aspect about them, maybe they're particularly shiny'' or particularly gridded and that's a useful kinda thing to film...and how would I do it?'' Meditation altar

I made this altar with the intention of using it in my film to signify the beginning of meditation session. It is very literal, but I think if someone is watching the film with no understanding of meditation, then it gives an indication to the viewer about the subject matter.

ink drops - calm

Here is a test I have created to illustrate the body in a particular state of calm. I have used ink drips into water and made it into a stop frame animation. I then overlayed an image of my back in a relaxed state, with a mask around the edges of the back, so that the ink has some boundaries.

Installation design ideas

Here are some pictures of the shrine at the buddhist centre that I attend. They have focused light downwards onto the shrine and the colours are rich and warm looking. I would like to create a something similar to this, but much simpler focusing on the candles, incense burning and a small buddha shrine. Ideally I would like to paint the room a warm rich and sensual colour - a reddish yellow.

I haven't quite decided what to put up on the walls either side of the walls yet but it needs to have an element of journey, that starts off very busy at the entrance and then fizzles out as it gets to the projection. This will depict how the process of meditation allows all the thoughts to essentially dissapear.

The main focus will be on the film projection, which I envisage to be focused at the back, although I will have to finalise this and make sure that it is viable in the allocated space. I also need to accurately take the measurements of the space again.

Heart beat test

Here is a stop frame test that I have created based on how I feel when I am anxious and stressed (pre-meditation). I need to work onhow to make the heart beat.

After meditation, all the stresses and anxieties melt away and you feel calm, but alert.

Peter Greenaway

A zed and Two Noughts

I have only watched the trailer of Peter Greenaway's film, A Zed and two noughts which looks at death and decay in quite an explicit way.

The use of time lapse depicts the theme of decay very accurately, and is interjected into the film sequencing at various points. The lighting used in the shots illuminates the objects in focus at various points and then fades them out to black. He sometimes flashes the light intermittently. These effect add contrast and impact to the viewer.
